Who We Are

         Our History

Presbyterians began to hold worship services in Hedgesville at least as far back as the Civil War—and perhaps before. In early times, the same preachers held services for Hedgesville and the Falling Waters and Tomahawk congregations.

In 1893, the chapel that is currently our sanctuary was constructed, but Hedgesville’s congregation remained linked with the Falling Waters church until 1932. On August 28, 1932, Hedgesville Presbyterian Church was formally organized with 55 members.

The church’s historic sanctuary, a fine example of American Gothic art, is entirely constructed of sawn wood in tongue-and-groove board. It is the work of a master carpenter, George Appel, whose thousands of calculations, measurements, and grand design is a treasured testimony to his skills and craftsmanship.  The wooden ceilings and walls feature triangles that are arranged in a pattern to form almost perfect X’s. These X’s represent the Greek Cross, an ancient symbol for Christ and Christians.

Adjoining the sanctuary is a modern educational building, completed in the 1990’s and dedicated on June 27, 1999. This building replaced the “church house,” a two-story log house built in the 1840’s, where generations of children and adults joined for Sunday School and church meetings.
